Power output — the ability to generate force quickly — depends on fast-twitch fiber dominance, the rate of force development, and the energy systems that fuel explosive efforts. ACTN3 in fast-twitch fibers, AMPD1 (which handles ATP regeneration during high-power work), and IGF2 (associated with muscle mass) shape the power phenotype.
Carriers of the ACTN3 RR genotype are associated with stronger fast-twitch performance, faster sprint times, and higher peak power output. Carriers of the XX genotype are associated with less power potential but better endurance capacity. AMPD1 deficiency variants are associated with reduced ATP regeneration under high-power demand — and earlier muscle fatigue in explosive efforts.
Explosive training (sprints, plyometrics, Olympic lifts, heavy compound movements with intent) develops the rate-of-force-development side regardless of variant. Creatine supplementation provides a consistent ~5–10% boost in maximal power output across most variant patterns. Adequate protein, carbohydrate timing, and full recovery between explosive sessions matter more than total volume.
