Endurance capacity runs on aerobic energy systems: ACE I/D (angiotensin-converting enzyme insertion/deletion) influences oxygen delivery efficiency, PPARA shapes fat oxidation for sustained effort, PPARGC1A drives mitochondrial biogenesis, and HIF1A handles cellular oxygen-sensing. The network sets the body's ceiling for sustained aerobic work.
Carriers of the ACE I allele are associated with higher endurance capacity and stronger response to endurance training. Carriers of PPARA high-activity variants are associated with greater fat-oxidation capacity during sustained work. PPARGC1A favorable variants are associated with faster mitochondrial adaptation. Combinations of these variants produce the genuine "endurance athlete" phenotype.
Long, slow distance work builds the capillary density and mitochondrial mass that endurance depends on. Zone 2 training (the easy-conversational-pace work) drives most of the adaptation.
