Technology and Data Limitations

Sequencing Limitations

Whole genome sequencing performed by CLIA-, COLA-, CAP-, and AABB-accredited laboratory partners may have technical limitations, including:

Coverage Gaps: Certain genomic regions may have incomplete or no coverage (e.g., centromeres, highly repetitive sequences, structural variations)

No-Call Regions: Some genetic variants may be uninterpretable due to sequencing quality, ambiguous mapping, or technical artifacts

Analysis Constraints: Not all genetic variants may be included in lifestyle reports

For detailed information about sequencing technology and its limitations, please refer to our Kit & Report Order Terms.

Interpretation Limitations

Evolving Science: Genetic research is constantly advancing, and interpretations may change as new scientific evidence emerges

Population Differences: Most genetic research has focused on populations of European ancestry, which may affect applicability to other populations

Complex Traits: Lifestyle traits are influenced by multiple genes, environmental factors, and gene-environment interactions

Statistical Associations: Reports show correlations between genetic variants and traits, not causation or certainty

Important Risks and Considerations

Privacy and Data Sharing Risks

Re-identification Risk: Even pseudonymized genetic data carries inherent re-identification risks

Third-Party Sharing: Once you share genetic data with third-party applications or services, we cannot control how they use, store, or protect your data

Family Implications: Your genetic data may reveal information about biological relatives

For complete information about privacy risks, see our Genetic Data Consent Notice.

Insurance and Legal Considerations

The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) provides some protections in the United States, but has significant limitations:

GINA does not cover life insurance, disability insurance, or long-term care insurance

GINA protections apply only to health insurance and employment

State and international laws vary in their protection of genetic information.

Consult a legal professional before sharing genetic data in contexts that may affect insurance, employment, or legal matters.

Emotional Impact

Lifestyle reports may reveal unexpected information about your genetic predispositions that could cause emotional responses such as anxiety, worry, or changes in self-perception. Consider discussing genetic findings with healthcare professionals or genetic counselors if you experience concerns.

Third-Party Services and Content

Our Services may include links to third-party websites or allow integration with third-party applications. We do not:

Control, verify, or endorse third-party content or services

Assume responsibility for third-party privacy practices, security measures, or data handling.

Guarantee the accuracy, reliability, or safety of third-party services

Review third-party terms of service and privacy policies carefully before sharing your genetic data. Use of third-party services is at your own risk.

Medical Emergencies

Our Services are not designed for medical emergencies. In the event of a medical emergency:

United States: Call 911 immediately

Outside the United States: Contact your local emergency services

Do not delay seeking professional medical help based on information from our Services.

No Warranties; Limitation of Liability

We provide our Services "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind. We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, reliability, or applicability of information provided through our Services.

For complete warranty disclaimers and limitations of liability, see the Reprocessing and Refund Policy and Limitation of Liability sections of our Kit & Report Order Terms.

By using our Services, you agree to:

Use Services only for lifestyle and educational purposes, not for medical decision-making.

Consult healthcare professionals before making significant lifestyle or health-related changes.

Understand and accept the risks associated with genetic testing and the sharing of data.

Protect your account security and consider privacy implications before sharing genetic data with third parties.

Regulatory Status

CLIA Certification

CLIA-, COLA-, CAP-, and AABB-accredited laboratory partners perform our genetic sequencing. CLIA certification establishes quality standards for laboratory procedures but does not cover the interpretation of results or lifestyle reporting.

FDA Status

Our lifestyle reports are not FDA-approved medical devices and are not intended for clinical diagnosis or treatment decisions. The FDA does not regulate lifestyle genetic testing services of this type.

FTC Compliance

We comply with Federal Trade Commission requirements prohibiting false, misleading, or deceptive claims about genetic testing services.
