Mosaic Biodata
Mosaic vs Ancestry

Built for ancestry, or built for action?

Ancestry estimates are interesting once. Mosaic gives you a clinical-grade operating manual you'll use for the rest of your life, and your DNA never changes.

  • Primary purpose

    Mosaic Biodata

Clinical-grade DNA for daily-life optimization — nutrition, sleep, recovery, hormones.

    Ancestry

    Ancestry estimates and family-history matching.

  • Genome coverage

    Mosaic Biodata

    100% — whole-genome sequencing at 30× depth.

    Ancestry

    ~0.02% — SNP chip sampling pre-selected positions.

  • Health-trait insights

    Mosaic Biodata

108 clinically-validated insights across 9 areas of your health.

    Ancestry

Limited health features depending on tier and region.

  • Lab standard

    Mosaic Biodata

CLIA-, COLA-, CAP-, and AABB-accredited U.S. lab — the same regulatory standard clinical reference labs use.

    Ancestry

High-throughput consumer genotyping; not a CLIA-certified clinical workflow.

  • Practitioner workflow

    Mosaic Biodata

Insights designed to be read, defended, and acted on in a clinical setting.

    Ancestry

Consumer-facing; raw data export possible for clinical use.

  • Raw data ownership

    Mosaic Biodata

Lifetime ownership of your full raw genome.

    Ancestry

Raw SNP data downloadable; no whole-genome data generated.

  • Future-proofing

    Mosaic Biodata

Every future scientific breakthrough applies to data you already have.

    Ancestry

Re-running on a different sample is the only way to capture variants the chip missed.

  • Privacy posture

    Mosaic Biodata

HIPAA-compliant pipeline. No selling, sharing, licensing, or monetizing your genome.

    Ancestry

Consumer privacy policy; opt-in research/biotech partnerships common.

  • Pricing model

    Mosaic Biodata

One-time purchase. No subscription, no upsells.

    Ancestry

Lower entry price; ongoing subscription for the deeper traits/heritage features.

Why this matters

The DNA they read is the only DNA you'll ever see.

Ancestry’s product is excellent at what it was built for: ancestry estimates, family matches, and a growing set of trait/heritage features. The underlying technology — a SNP chip — is what makes that price point possible.

A SNP chip captures the variants the manufacturer decided were worth sampling at chip-design time. Anything else in your genome is invisible. That’s fine for ancestry. It’s a hard ceiling for clinical interpretation.

Mosaic is built around the opposite trade-off: read 100% of your DNA once, store it securely, and re-interpret it as the science evolves. Same cheek swab. Different ceiling.

What this difference actually changes

Ancestry is one answer. Lifestyle genomics is an ongoing one.

AncestryDNA tells you where your great-great-grandparents probably lived. Mosaic tells you which foods, sleep timing, supplements, and training inputs your body actually responds to — variant by variant. The first is a one-time look. The second is the biology you live in every day, for the rest of your life.
